Mother of slain girl released

SMITHFIELD

Helen Reyes went before a judge in Smithfield on a charge of negligent child abuse causing serious bodily harm. Bond was left at $50,000 despite a plea from prosecutors to increase it.

Helen Reyes' boyfriend - 21-year-old Jonathan Douglas Richardson - was charged last week with first-degree murder in the death of Teghan Alyssa Skiba.

Richardson is accused of beating, biting, and sexually assaulting the girl while Reyes was out of state for military training.

Johnston County Sheriff Steve Bizzell told ABC11 that Reyes knew Richardson had beaten the girl in the past and knew she was leaving the 4-year-old in an abusive situation.

In court Friday, Assistant District Attorney Kelling Sandling said Reyes witnessed blood spots on the back of her daughter's shirt as well as cuts and bruises after leaving the girl with him on a previous occasion.

"He stated Teghan had vomited on his chair and therefore he did beat her," said Sandling.

Reyes is due back in court August 12. Richardson's next court date is August 5.
