Victim shoots suspect during attempted break-in

FAYETTEVILLE It happened around 11:30 p.m. Sunday at a home on Decatur Drive.

Loreigh McDaniel says she and a friend were sitting outside the home when a man waving a pistol ran into the yard ordering them inside.

"We went into the house he put a gun to my head and he pushed me down the other girl was also down, he put the gun down on her," she said.

Police say McDaniel's boyfriend Mikey Campbell was in a back bedroom, heard the commotion and grabbed his shotgun.

"When he saw the gunman running down the hallway he shot him, the first time with the shotgun and shot him again as he tried shot him on his way out," Fayetteville Police Spokesperson Dan Grubb said.

Police say the suspect, 27-year-old Armon Leroi Mattox, fled the home on foot. Mattox was wounded in the arm and side and left a trail of blood as he fled the house.

An acquaintance of Mattox's, 27-year-old Kendall Leon Wortham, drove Mattox to a fire station for assistance and said he found Mattox lying beside the road. Wortham was charged with cocaine possession.

EMS then transported Mattox to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center. He is currently recovering at UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill.

Investigators don't believe the attempted home invasion was random, but haven't commented on a motive.

Police say several felony charges against him are pending and the investigation is ongoing.

McDaniel says she is just thankful she and her boyfriend weren't hurt and none of her children were at home at the time.
