Deputies responded to a home Monday in reference to a child being shot. When they arrived on the scene, they discovered several people who were screaming and upset.
Deputies discovered a 4-year-old shot, but initially they were not able to locate the weapon. Two men, 32-year-old Derrick Mayo and 18-year-old Marke Parker, were at the home with the children when the shooting happened.
According to authorities, the children were upstairs playing when they discovered a gun in a closet in Mayo's room. The gun accidentally went off while they were playing, hitting the 4-year-old.
The child was transported to Halifax Regional Medical Center where she was pronounced dead.
Mayo is charged with possession of a firearm by a felon, storing a weapon in a manner which is accessible by a minor, conspiracy and simple possession of marijuana.
He was placed under a $15,000 bond and is scheduled to make a court appearance on Sept. 1.
