Fans meet the Heels amid investigation

CHAPEL HILL But both the NCAA probe into agents, and the school's own probe into possible academic fraud did hold some weight on the minds of fans who came out for the annual "Meet the Heels" event.

Many of the die-hard fans who have watched the team for 30 plus years are not deterred by recent allegations.

"It's just close to the heart," said John Godwin. "You hope that none of the things that you've heard are true."

Diane Collins and her family came to support her son - defensive player Deunta Williams.

"God is in control," Doretha Williams said. "He has the last say so. I do hope they will clear up all the trouble that's been going on."

Fans got to meet the players today and grab autographs. They still support Coach Butch Davis, and believe his denial of any involvement at a recent news conference.

All told - they are sticking by their team.

"If we do lose some players, you just got to have the other guys step up," Godwin said. "If those guys step up to the plate and play good, then we'll be good this year."
