Lawrence's friends told his father that the scuffle started over a flicked cigarette butt that hit another man.
He is currently in critical condition at Rex Hospital.
On Monday, authorities arrested Charles Zachary Poll of Raleigh in connection the incident. He is charged with assault inflicting serious injury.
Poll was taken to the Wake County Jail.
Officials say tips stemming from media coverage of the case helped them identify Poll as a suspect.
