Duke University cancels student tailgating

DURHAM

It happened on campus November 6 before the Virginia game. The minor - who was a guest of a student - was taken to the Duke Emergency Department for treatment and will be okay.

Duke university officials say the incident was just the final straw - as there have been growing concerns about behavior at tailgating events for some time.

"This incident has vividly revealed that tailgate as is practiced at Duke must come to an end," said Vice President for Student Affairs Larry Moneta in an e-mail to students.

Moneta said there would be no student tailgate before the game this Saturday against Boston College. The school will rethink what's allowed for next year.

"Over the spring, we will work with students, Athletics and many others to develop a new form of football game day celebration....one that will support our student athletes, be safe and healthy, and showcase the pride of "Dear Old Duke," said Moneta.
