The car began smoking and the driver eventually pulled over to the median near the Six Forks Road exit.

The driver got out of the car and put his hands in the air before lying face down on the ground.

Police officers then took him into custody.

Raleigh police spokesman Jim Sughrue said the incident began around 12:30 p.m. in the 4000 block of Tournament Drive when the driver of the car tried to avoid detectives with the Raleigh Police Department’s Drugs and Vice Unit.

Sughrue said 23-year-old Steven Denell Elleby of Durham pointed a handgun at two members of the RPD from his vehicle.

As he was fleeing, Sughrue said Elleby threw a handgun and drugs from his vehicle at several locations.

The weapon and packages of drugs were recovered by officers. Several motorists assisted officers by either reporting locations where items had been thrown from the vehicle or standing by at locations to point out the items to law enforcement personnel.

During the chase, Elleby took Wade Avenue to I-40 and stayed on I-40 until taking the exit to I-540 eastbound. While in the process of taking the I-540 exit, he sideswiped another vehicle - sending one person to the hospital with minor injuries.

Sughrue say members of the N.C. State Highway Patrol and the Wake Sheriff’s Office helped stop Elleby where he was finally captured.

Charges are pending.
