Suspect surrenders in overnight standoff

WAKE COUNTY It happened at a mobile home park off NC-55 on Green Clover Drive in Fuquay-Varina.

Authorities say around 11:30 p.m. Sunday, they received reports about shots being fired and that a woman was inside a mobile home with a man - possibly against her will.

Wake County Sheriff Donnie Harrison says he was able to later determine that the man was in the home alone and that the woman left sometime earlier.

"There was only one person in there, Bryant Mims," Harrison said. "He is being talked to at this time, will be put under arrest for several charges. But the lady is safe, and that was our main concern, the welfare of that lady."

Through the night, heavily armed officers kept an eye on the mobile home - later firing tear gas inside.

The suspect, Bryant Wade Mims, surrendered to authorities shortly after 4 a.m.

The sheriff says it is not the first time authorities have dealt with Mims.

He's now charged with possession of cocaine and resisting arrest in connection with the overnight standoff. Mims is currently under a $25,000 bond.

Meanwhile, detectives say they will talk with the woman that was believed to be in the home to determine what happened inside that led to the standoff.
