A plan released Monday calls for a new focus on streamlining the huge university. Chancellor Randolph Woodson wrote in a letter to the university community that NC State needs to make the changes to remain a successful institution.

About 600 courses that haven't been taught in five years are set to be eliminated. Other classes will get larger.
Officials said students who may be concerned about classes specific to their major should not be concerned.
"In the UNC System, it's our policy not to end a course while students are enrolled. They'd finish and we'd phase out," said Provost Warwick Arden.
Arden - NCSU's chief academic officer - is one of the minds behind the restructuring plan as the school faces an up to $80 million shortfall next year.
He said 173 undergraduate classes have fewer than 10 students and 106 graduate have fewer than five students.
Woodson says it's not clear how many jobs will be lost. He says that won't be known until the state budget is finished.
But the recommendations call for cutting several high-ranking administrative positions, including two vice chancellors and a dean.
