Soldier fatally shot at Fayetteville nightclub

CUMBERLAND COUNTY

Debbie Tanna with the Cumberland County Sheriff's Office said 28-year-old Breon Joseph Smith was working as a security guard at Congo's Latin Club on Cumberland Road when he approached two customers around 1:45 a.m.

The customers were allegedly causing a commotion, so Smith asked them to leave. Tanna says Smith was threatened by the men and one of them left the building and went to his car to get a gun. He soon reappeared and shot the soldier.

Smith, who was assigned to the 659th Maintenance Battalion, was taken by ambulance to the hospital, where he later died.

Tanna identified the shooter as 28-year old Kenneth Ronald Clark of 822 Opal Court, Fayetteville.

Clark turned himself in to authorities Thursday afternoon.
