Man shot after ramming police car

DURHAM

It started when officers were sent to the Home Depot store on North Pointe Drive around 1:40 p.m. for a call about a larceny in progress.

Investigators say one suspect left the store and got in a van. As officers approached the van, they say he rammed a Durham police car. Shots were fired, and the driver of the van was hit in the arm.

The driver allegedly fled the scene and officers chased him on Guess Road to Broad Street. The chase continued on Green Street and the driver of the van turned the wrong way onto Duke Street. The chase ended when the van crashed at the intersection of Duke Street and Corporation Street.

The driver of the van was taken to Duke University Hospital for treatment of injuries that do not appear to be life-threatening. No one else was hurt. A second suspect was taken into custody on North Pointe Drive.

The SBI and the Durham Police Department's Professional Standards Division are investigating the shooting, which is standard procedure in an officer-involved shooting.

The names of the two suspects have not been released.
