Two arrested for allegedly shooting deputy

ORANGE COUNTY Officials sent out reverse 911 calls to residents to warn them to be on the lookout for two men who were wanted for shooting at a deputy overnight.

Sheriff's officials say around 3:30 a.m., 28-year-old Lamarr Murphy and 27-year-old Sammie Lee Mebane Jr. were walking along the side of the road when a sheriff's deputy investigating a breaking and entering case spotted them. As the deputy started to question them, one of the men allegedly pulled out a gun and fired.

The deputy was hit in the belt around his waist that holds his weapon and other equipment, but was not injured. The incident sparked an intense manhunt - deputies with weapons and helicopters scanning the ground.

More than five hours later, officials arrested the men.

Both are charged with attempted first-degree murder, possession of a firearm by felon, and assault on a law enforcement officer.

Murphy's bond is set at $2 million and Mebane's at $1 million.
