Mount Airy police chief, captain shot

MOUNT AIRY, N.C. Police officers and sheriff's deputies responded to the woman's home around 8:30 a.m. Friday.

Investigators say she refused to put down a gun she was holding while in a back bedroom. They say she eventually lowered the gun and fired at law enforcement, and officers returned fire.

Police Chief Dale Watson and Captain Alan Freeman were both hit. The suspect, Talana Salissa Cain, 45, died at the scene. She was found to have sustained several gunshot wounds.

No one else was hurt.
