It happened on Olive Chapel Road near Kelly Road around 8:30 a.m. The crash site is near a construction area.
Police identified the driver Friday as 24-year-old Thomas Aaron Smith of Apex. The said he was driving a 1997 Mazda Miata.
Police at the crash scene Thursday said they believe speed was likely a factor.
No details have been released about the victim.
