Motorcyclist killed after colliding with car

FRANKLIN COUNTY The accident happened around 5 a.m. on US 401 in Franklin County, just south of Louisburg.

Authorities say 51-year-old Philip Munson of Louisburg was travelling northbound on US 401, when a driver of a 1993 Infinity travelling southbound attempted to pass a vehicle on a double yellow center line and collided head on with Munson.

Munson was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the Infinity, 20-year-old Jorge Luis Labra of Louisburg, was extricated from his vehicle and transported by helicopter to WakeMed Hospital in Raleigh with non-life threatening injuries.

Labra is charged with driving while impaired, driving with no operational license and improper passing.

The north and southbound lanes of US 401 had to be closed between US 98 and Tarboro Road as authorities cleared the scene.
