Driver in crash facing murder charge

WAKE COUNTY

Raleigh police spokesperson Jim Sughrue said investigators determined the driver caused the crash intentionally.

The crash happened last Friday on Chapanoke Road west of Wilmington Street just before 9:30 a.m.

Now, Lisa Howard Leak, 40, faces the murder charge and charges of assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury for the other injuries.

Leak's mother, Amy Pauline Chukwu, 59, who was riding in the vehicle's front passenger's seat, died in the crash.

Alexis Shamira Mae Wall, 17, and Erica Jeannette Freeman, 39, who were in the backseat, were injured.

Sughrue said Leak remains at WakeMed hospital, where she is being treated for injuries from the crash, and she will be transported to the Wake County Jail for processing when her medical condition permits.

Eyewitnesses told ABC11 last week they saw the car suddenly lose control while driving down Chapanoke Road, causing it to drive through a soccer field and through a goal net before crashing into some trees.
