Suspect dies after officers try to arrest him

FAYETTEVILLE

According to police, the incident began around 2:30 p.m. when an officer observed a man acting erratically in the area of Eastern Boulevard and Adams Street. The officer said the man, who was in his 60s, was attempting to jump onto vehicles on the roadway.

When the officer attempted to take him into custody, the suspect began to resist. After a brief struggle, police determined the man was unresponsive.

The suspect was taken to Cape Fear Valley Hospital where he was pronounced dead. The cause of death is unknown.

Police are withholding the suspect's name until his next of kin is notified.

On Thursday, the Fayetteville Police Department released the names of the officers involved in the incident - Alexander Leviner, Christopher Crews, and Travis Smith. All three are part of the Campbellton Bureau Patrol.

It is unclear which officer attempted to take the suspect into custody.

Three officers are on administrative duty pending the outcome of an In-Custody Death Investigation that will be conducted by the SBI.
