Crossing guard struck in Fayetteville

FAYETTEVILLE

It happened around 7:40 a.m. in front of William H. Owen Elementary School.

The guard, 68-year-old Betty Carter, was attempting to stop traffic when she was struck by a 2008 Chevy SUV driven by 64-year-old Terry Garner of Laurinburg, NC.

Carter was taken to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center. Police said her injuries are not life-threatening.

The SUV received minor damage to the front fender on the passenger side of the vehicle.

Witnesses told police Carter did not wait until traffic came to a complete stop before stepping off the curb and into traffic.

No charges will be filed in the incident.
