They said 44-year-old Robert Shawn Donovan of 3348 Welsh Lake Drive called 911 around 8 p.m. Sunday after he allegedly struck 36-year old Peggy Ann Perez.
The incident stemmed from an argument between the pair.
Authorities said it started when Perez threw a grape jelly jar at Donovan's head after he told her she could not take his bags while she packed to leave. Donovan then allegedly picked up a frying pan and struck her on the head.
Perez fell to the floor and was not moving. Perez, who was recently in a car accident and suffered a broken leg, was taken to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center. She was diagnosed with a concussion, but refused treatment.
Detectives charged Donovan with assault with a deadly weapon and assault on a female. He was released from the Cumberland County Detention Center after posting bond.
