LAUSD, teachers' union reach tentative deal

The new deal gives more authority to teachers, principals and parents in determining policies at their schools.

Also under the tentative deal, individual schools would have the right to reject principals and teachers sent to them on a must-place basis by the district. They would also have the right to waive aspects of the collective bargaining agreement and some district policies.

The deal still needs to be ratified by members of the union.

The labor contract expired July1, but teachers have been working under the terms of the previous agreement.

United Teachers Los Angeles teachers are expected to vote on the agreement Dec. 12.
