Flames rip through a Smithfield Apartment Complex

Authorities say a total of six units were destroyed in the blaze

Several families are looking for a new place to stay after a fire tore through a Smithfield apartment complex Sunday.

It happened just before 2 p.m. at the Johnston Court Apartments in Johnston County.

Fire officials said smoke and flames were already shooting through the roof when firefighters arrived.

Authorities said a total of six units were destroyed in the blaze.

The Red Cross assisted the families whose apartments were damaged.

No injuries were reported.

Investigators were still trying to determine the exact cause of the fire Sunday evening.
