Two times last year, the same exact ambulance model had an engine problem and ABC11 has been told, although the engine didn't catch on fire like in this latest incident, there was smoke and crews caught it in time before there was fire.
"The crew were preparing lunch and opened the door and noticed flames coming from the front part of the ambulance," said Wake Co. EMS Dist. Chief Jeff Hammerstein.
Right now, the source of the fire is still a mystery. It started in the engine and spread quickly, destroying the $240,000 vehicle.
The ambulance in question is the same model that nearly caught on fire before. Already, Wake County EMS has hauled a dozen similar models into the garage to be inspected Thursday afternoon.
Hammerstein said no one is in danger. He said these trucks are always on the road similar to a police car. So, if there's a 911 call, he says they will be there with no problems.
The cause of Thursday's ambulance engine remains fire under investigation.
