Police in Raleigh were involved in a standoff for nearly nine hours in the 1100 block of Garner Road, according to Raleigh Police Information Officer Jim Sughrue.

The standoff started Thursday around 2 p.m. when police went to serve involuntary mental commitment papers, but the man would not let officers into his apartment and he would not come outside.

The man flashed a knife and told police he had other weapons inside. Police said there was not anyone else inside the man's apartment during the standoff.

Around 10:30 p.m. police deployed four tear gas bombs to end the standoff and took the man into custody. He was taken to a hospital for evaluation then will be taken to a mental hospital.

Nearby residents were evacuated during the incident, and no injuries were reported.
