One shot and killed in burglary attempt

The Sampson County Sheriff's Office said Monday that a man is dead following an attempted burglary early Friday morning.

It happened in the 1900 block of Tomahawk Highway in Harrells.

According to investigators, the occupants of a home awoke to find three men wearing dark hooded shirts in their house. There was a struggle and shots were fired. The three men ran out of the home towards a wooded area.

The body of one of the men was found in the road a short distance from the home. One of the residents was also wounded. Darius Howard, 25, was listed in stable condition at New Hanover Regional Medical Center.

The dead man was identified as Michael Antonio Whittington, 30, of St. Pauls, NC.

Just before 4 p.m., two men were taken into custody by searching officers. Monquel Jamel Melvin, 27, of Parkton, NC and Antonio Marcel Robinson, 36, of St. Pauls, NC, are charged with first-degree burglary, assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury, and attempted robbery. Both men also had existing warrants for other unrelated charges.
