A man wounded in a shooting Monday evening in Rocky Mount has died.

Police said 22-year-old Jessie Berry Joyner passed away just after 7 a.m. Wednesday at Vidant Medical Center (formerly Pitt Memorial) in Greenville.

Joyner was wounded around 5 p.m. Monday in the 1000 block of Blandwood Drive. Investigators said a group of men were arguing and shots were fired from a vehicle hitting Joyner.

Two men fled in the car and were pursued by police. The men abandoned the car and ran, but were captured by officers.

Jonathan Leon Nixon 22, and James Braxton ONeal Powell, 21, were initially charged with assault with a deadly weapon, but the Rocky Mount Police Department said investigators have consulted with the district attorney, and charges against the two suspects have been upgraded to first-degree murder.
