Men used cellphones to call rescuers from river

CHATHAM COUNTY, N.C.

The two men were 50-75 yards down past where U.S. 64 crosses the river when they fell out of the canoe.

Officials said they were able to call 911 from their cellphone which was not damaged by the water. They were stuck in the water for about an hour.

Rescue teams from Apex, Northern Chatham County, Pittsboro, and Southern Orange County were able to pull the men to safety.

The rescuers then had trouble returning upstream due the strong current.

The two men were not injured.
