DURHAM

Eyewitnesses told ABC11 that the man was trying to get away from police in his car when he crashed into a utility pole and then an embankment, just feet from a nearby house. It happened around 8:30 p.m.

Officers confronted the driver, 38-year-old Joseph Damone Parrish, while he was trapped inside his car. He was taken to the hospital for his injuries and then released.

Parrish has been charged with driving while impaired, careless and reckless driving, driving with revoked license, possession of open container of alcohol in passenger area, passing on double yellow line and felony speeding to elude arrest.

Police said they were trying to stop Parrish after they observed a possible drug transaction involving Parrish and an unknown person at a convenience store on North Alston Avenue.
