Wake County woman's body found in truck

GALAX, Va.

Officers in Virginia now said they believe the woman was killed in Wake County and now her husband is in police custody, awaiting extradition back to North Carolina.

Wednesday, investigators scoured the property of a home on Creedmoor Road in Wake County. It's where 42-year-old Sonny Howard and his wife, 50-year-old Sherry Howard, lived together.

"One of the neighbors this morning, close to ten o'clock, said they saw what appeared to be a body in the backyard," said Wake County Sheriff Donnie Harrison. "They told us. Of course, when we arrived at the scene, we didn't find anyone here."

Deputies then put out a police alert for a green pick-up truck. That's when police in Galax, Va. stopped the vehicle traveling west on Stuart Drive.

"The Galax, Va. police stopped him in Virginia," said Harrison. "Unfortunately, Sherry is deceased and he is in custody."

Galax police say Sherry's body was found in the truck bed. Sonny was then arrested without incident.

Officers said it appeared Sherry was murdered in Wake County, but it's unclear exactly where.

"We don't know if it occurred here or not," said Harrison. "That's what we've got to piece together, and that's why we're treating this as a crime scene."

Deputies said the couple had a teen son together. It's unclear if the two had a history of domestic violence.

Sonny Howard is being held in the New River Valley Regional Jail in Virginia, before court proceedings Thursday.
