Abaroa pleads not guilty, trial date set for Oct.

DURHAM

Raven Abaroa pleaded not guilty. His trial date was then set for the week of Oct. 29, 2012.

Abaroa was arrested at his home in Idaho in 2010. He was extradited to North Carolina and has been sitting in jail since then.

After Monday's hearing, Janet Abaroa's family reacted to the not guilty plea.

"I'm pleased we're finally moving forward and that an arrest was made several years ago and we're looking forward to a successful conclusion in the trial process," said family spokesman Tim Dowd.

Raven told police he found his wife stabbed to death in the couple's home on Ferrand Drive in Durham on April 26, 2005. She was pregnant at the time of her death.

Their son, who was 6 months old at the time, was found unharmed, sleeping in a room next to Janet's.

Raven Abaroa told officers he found his wife when he returned home from a soccer game.

Police said they found no obvious signs of a break-in, aside from a laptop that was missing from the home.
