Car vandalism prompts Hazmat scare

CARY

Police and firefighters were called to Balwins Gate on Kingsclere Drive around midnight after a man reported a suspicious substance inside the car.

The man said a hole had been cut into the roof of his Ford Mustang convertible and a liquid had been poured into the car.

When officers arrived at the scene, they said they could smell a chemical odor when he got within 20 feet of the car.

Police taped off the parking lot and called in the Raleigh Hazmat, who determined the substance was hydrogen peroxide and was not dangerous.

Police are now looking for the person behind the vandalism.
