Husband & wife arrested in cockfighting bust

FRESNO, Calif.

Juan Carlos Gonzalez and his wife, Leticia Aguilar Gonzalez, face one felony count of conspiracy, and more than 11 hundred counts each of possession of animal fighting paraphernalia.

The raid followed a more than yearlong investigation, and involved the Humane Society of the United States, Tulare County Sheriff's Deputies, and Animal Control Officers.

In all, 388 birds were seized, as well more than a thousand cockfighting knives.

"The number of implements that were seized in this event is the largest amount ever seized U.S. history at one location," Eric Sakach said. "So this is a major haul for Tulare County and for the country."

Most of the birds seized had to be euthanized, but a few have been placed with animal sanctuaries.

The Humane Society of the United States says Juan Carlos Gonzalez is a U.S. distributor for a Mexican company that sells cockfighting paraphernalia.

They say they found records and video inside the home that could lead investigators to others involved throughout the country.
