Wet roads and speed were blamed for a head-on collision that sent two people to the hospital in critical condition.

The wreck happened around 4:45 p.m. on Bissette Road near Wendell in Wake County and involved a SUV and a pick-up truck.

The NC Highway Patrol said the driver of the truck, 16-year-old Benjamin Watkins, lost control on the wet road and crossed the center line.

He was thrown from the vehicle.

The SUV ended up rolling into a ditch, and its driver, 43-year-old Sharon Ray was also taken to the hospital in critical condition.

The passenger in the SUV, 21-year-old Miranda Creech, was also hurt with non-life threatening injuries.

The road was shut down for three hours.

Officials said charges are pending.
