Earnest Thomas, 60, was found Thursday off Old Oxford Road in Durham County.
The U.S. Marshals Service said they used bloodhounds to locate Thomas on the back porch of a house.
He was returned to the prison by 7 p.m.
Officials said Thomas, who is originally from Henderson, was serving a sentence for cocaine possession.
He was scheduled to be released in 2020.
