Streets at Southpoint is teaming up with Habitat for Humanity of Durham, Valdivia Construction, Belk, and ABC 11 to build a new home for a family in need.
While the mall is not the usual location for a home build, organizers said the idea is to raise awareness about Habitat's mission.
"Our goal is to serve 72 families this year, whether it is from new home ownership opportunities in Durham and abroad, or through our critical repair program," said Blake Strayhorn with Habitat. "We rely on home sponsors, volunteers, and campaigns such as this to help fulfill our goal."
The new home is going up in an area adjacent to Cheesecake Factory and Crate and Barrel. Once framing is finished, it'll stay there for three weeks.
"Providing a family a home is one of the best gifts we can give. We are excited to be able to partner with Habitat for Humanity of Durham, our surrounding community, and co-sponsors," said Patrick Anderson, Sr. General Manager of The Streets at Southpoint.
On August 6, the house will be dismantled and moved to its permanent address in Durham.

Additionally, The Streets at Southpoint has pledged to donate one dollar to Habitat for Humanity of Durham per "like" the mall receives on its Facebook from July 19 through August 31. You can find the mall's Facebook page at www.facebook.com/StreetsatSouthpoint to participate.
