Durham man leads deputy on 11-mile chase

DURHAM

The chase began near the intersection of S. Miami Boulevard and Pleasant Drive at 10:15 p.m. when a 2008 Honda Accord crossed the center line and nearly collided with a deputy's car. Officials said the car was being driven by 32-year-old Maurice Powell.

The deputy attempted to stop the vehicle for crossing the center line, but Powell refused to stop and began to flee southbound on S. Miami Boulevard. The pursuit continued to Marly Drive, Angier Avenue, Tyonek Drive and back to S Miami Boulevard, reaching speeds of 80 mph.

The chase continued north on S. Miami Boulevard to Highway 70 to Interstate 85 North. The suspect then exited onto E Club Boulevard and continued to Dearborn Drive, Old Oxford Road, Craven Street, and finally stopped in the 600-block of Martin Street when the driver "jumped and ran" from the vehicle.

Sheriff's deputies chased Powell on foot for a short distance and soon captured him. Powell resisted arrest and was eventually placed into custody after more deputies and a Highway Patrol trooper arrived to assist the deputy.

Two deputies sustained minor injuries while attempting to arrest Powell. They were later treated at Durham Regional Hospital and released. Powell was not injured during the incident.

Powell, whose driver's license is permanently suspended, is charged with driving while license revoked, speeding, felony flee to elude arrest, resisting a public officer, possession of marijuana, and reckless driving.

He is being held in the Durham County Jail under a $75,500 bond. Powell is also being held on an outstanding order for arrest for driving while license revoked out of Duplin County.
