Many saw Anthony Bruno out on the trail Saturday handing out free bright blue whistles and white water bottles.
"The business I'm in is cycling, so everyone rides. It's a beautiful thing until I'd seen it (the crimes) on TV. That's when I realized," Bruno said.
The American Tobacco Trail has been in the news recently. Several physical attacks and flashing incidents have been reported.
At the other end of the trail, Durham Police trained volunteers who will serve as extra eyes and ears for authorities.
Durham Police cautioned people against traveling alone. "We want people walking in pairs. More people using the trail and using it together. The more groups that are out here, the safer the environment."
