Thousands of runners put their feet to the street Sunday morning for the sixth annual City of Oaks Marathon.

More than 5,000 runners registered for the event, which started and ended near the N.C. State University's Bell Tower on Hillsborough Street.

Organizers said Friday's last- minute cancelation of the New York City Marathon created a sudden boost in registration for the City of Oaks Marathon.  In an effort to accommodate some of the runners, organizers added more than 100 spots for the marathon field.
