USPS offers tips to protect packages

Luckily, there are steps the U.S. Postal Service recommends to protect your parcels.

"If you can avoid having it sent home and you're not going to be there, have the packages shipped to your job," said Monica Coachman-Robbs, with the USPS. "Have neighbors look out for you. If you have post office boxes, those are certainly secure."

Also, for gifts you're sending, don't send cash. Require the recipient to sign for their package, and spring for insurance on your gift, just in case.

There has already been a rash of delivery thefts reported in Charlotte.

So far, Raleigh, Apex and Cary all reported that they weren't aware of any problems this year, but authorities are still cautioning people to be careful.
