The crash happened just before 8PM last night on Mcdowell Street between Lane and Peace Streets.
Police said 52-year-old James Richard Gates Jr. of Fuquay Varina lost control of his car where Mcdowell Street turns into Capital Boulevard.
According to police, the tires lost traction, causing the vehicle to hit a concrete bridge.
The accident report indicates alcohol was a factor in the crash.
Mr. Gates would have turned 53-years-old Saturday.
