Charges have been filed against 30-year-old Jason Matthews Parker in the Dec. 28 death of 12-year-old James Lee Parker, according to North Carolina Wildlife officials.
Officials said Jason Parker, of Franklinton, fired a single shot with a 12 gauge shotgun which hit the child while hunting near Wake Forest.
Parker is charged with obtaining a license under false pretense and involuntary manslaughter.
Officials said Parker legally obtained a hunting license, but did not take the free hunting education course required by the state of North Carolina before using it.
Family members told ABC11 that Jason Parker he had been messing with his gun when it accidentally went off.
Parker was a sixth grader from Tarboro.
Wake County Sheriff Donnie Harrison said 12 year olds can hunt if they are accompanied by an adult.
