Health officials said Friday they're treating the discovery of a dead raccoon as a positive case of rabies after test results were inconclusive.

The animal was found Wednesday on Andrews Road.

Officials said feral cats were seen eating the carcass, and now traps have been set to try and catch the cats.

Residents in the area who spot animals that appear sick or are acting strangely should call Animal Control at (910) 321-6852 Monday-Friday 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., or call the Sheriff's Office at (910) 323-1500 after 5 p.m., weekends and holidays.

Pets should also be vaccinated.
