One killed in collision with Amtrak train

ROCKY MOUNT, N.C.

The accident happened around 11:45 p.m. at the railroad crossing at Battleboro Avenue and Railroad Streetin the Battleboro community.

Investigators said the vehicle was stopped on the tracks between the downed crossing arms when the southbound train struck the vehicle.

There were three people inside the vehicle when the accident occurred.

One occupant was pronounced dead at the scene. Officials have been identified him as 22-year-old Justin Lamar Alston, of Rocky Mount.

Another occupant from the vehicle, 25-year-old Dallas Ford Jr., was transported to Nash General Hospital for his injuries. He was later transported by air to Vidant Hospital in Greenville where he is listed in serious, but stable condition.

The third person in the car, 18-year-old Donovan Tillery, was not injured.

No injuries were reported on the Amtrak train.

A spokesperson said Amtrak Train 97 was traveling from New York to Miami with 271 passengers on board. Officials do not know how fast the train was going, but the track speed is 79 mph. The train was delayed nearly two hours.

Rocky Mount police are still investigating the accident.
