Mother claims murder suspect was abused

RALEIGH

Police say Krystal Delgado killed her boyfriend Dorian Kwame Cunningham in their Wake Forest apartment last week. Now she's in jail, and her daughter is in protective custody.

Delgado's mother Kim Hall told ABC11 Tuesday what neighbors and coworkers have also said: that Delgado lived in a home filled with violence.

"My daughter was calling me and telling me she was hurt on several occasions.  And she even asked me to come for my granddaughter once," said Hall. "And I did.  And I even worked with, I was calling the North Carolina authorities from Atlanta to have them go into the home and check on the household situation."

Hall said seeing her daughter in jail charged with first-degree murder was the hardest thing she's ever done.

"It broke my heart and I can't describe the way I feel inside right now about seeing my daughter in there," she said.

Wake Forest police say the 27-year-old stabbed her boyfriend to death at their apartment in a renovated cotton mill. But a 911 caller said Delgado claimed 23-year-old Cunningham tripped over a box and fell on the knife.

A neighbor told us he saw Cunningham before the stabbing and that he was drunk or high or both. Another neighbor - and one of Delgado's former coworkers - said she was battered - the victim of abuse.

They said if she killed Cunningham it had to be self-defense. But investigators disagree - although they have not released details of what they think happened.

"I would not wish anything like that on any parent no matter what anyone does.  No one ever deserves anything like that.  And I feel for, I feel for the mother.  I feel for his mother," said Hall.

Delgado has a 4-year-old daughter by another man. Her mother attended a closed custody hearing at the Wake County courthouse Tuesday hoping to take her granddaughter back to Atlanta with her.
