Sheriff: Sex offender tried to abduct child

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.

Investigators said surveillance video shows 43-year old Patrick Maurice Woodruff, of Vineyard Drive, Fayetteville, talking with the 11-year-old boy and trying to lure him away from his father in the county's Department of Social Services.

The boy refused Woodruff's alleged advances and ran to his father to report what happened. The boy was not hurt and a search for Woodruff started immediately. Deputies said the incident occurred February 18.

Woodruff is now charged with attempted child abduction. Bond was set at $70,000.

North Carolina's sex offender registry shows Woodruff was convicted of indecent liberties with minors in 1999 and 2005. The victims were 8 and 13.
