The Highway Patrol diverted all traffic onto I-440 West. Through traffic could continue on I-440 West around the northern side of Raleigh and access I-40 West again at Exit 1.
The truck driver said his big rig hydroplaned in the rain and he lost control. The truck slid down an embankment and spilled its load.
DOT workers used a backhoe to scoop up the debris and load it into a portable dumpster for removal.
The highway reopened at 1:30 p.m.
