Fundraiser held to help family of accident victim

ROCKY MOUNT

Twenty-month-old Madison Creech, of Zebulon, died in crash May 29 that injured three others.

The North Carolina Highway Patrol said 22-year-old Latricia Lynn Slack, of Smithfield, was going about 10 miles per hour over the speed limit in her 1997 Chevrolet when she apparently lost control. Her car then hit a tree and flipped upside down along N.C. Highway 96 north near Antioch Church Road, just north of Selma.

Little Madison was trapped inside the car for nearly an hour as crews tried to get her out. She later died after an urgent Life Flight to the hospital.

Madison's mother, Nicole Ballentine has friends supporting her. They put together Sunday's fundraiser at Applebee's, called Pancakes for Pooh

"Nicole was just a great mom and Maddie was just a ray of sunshine who gave her purpose in her life and she lost that and she's grieving for her," said organizer Nancy Bullock.

Other organizations such as True Swagger Motorcycle and Social Club and local churches also collected money for the cause

Sales of Sunday's breakfasts will help defray huge unexpected bills now faced by Ballentine.

It's their way of saying "We love you Nicole" in a very big way.
