Raleigh group in need of fan, A/C donations

RALEIGH

The Helping Hand Mission handed out 100 fans to people desperately needing air conditioners on Friday, but they need your help.

People desperate to get some relief from the heat began lining up early Friday morning.

The nonprofit has handed out 800 fans since the beginning of summer to the sick and elderly, or people who can't afford one, but they're running out.

Executive director Silvia Wiggins says the phone has been ringing off the hook.

"Monday when they were talking about 90 degrees, I had so many people call," said Wiggins. "I had to tell them to call back. We had to stop taking calls>"

Helping hand relies solely on donations. Until they get more in, clients will have to go without.

"When you talk directly to the people and you hear their cries or you see somebody come in and cry, then you see that this is a serious situation," said Wiggins.

Helping Hand Mission gave out their last fan at 5 p.m. Friday. They've given out 800 since summer began. They're asking for the community to donate gently used fans and air conditioners at their Rock Quarry Road location.
