Merrill takes helm at Wake County Schools

CARY, N.C.

Dr. Jim Merrill has several challenges ahead of him including a battle with Wake County commissioners over funding and control of school buildings.

During a news conference Thursday afternoon, Merrill said passage of the school construction bond is critical.

However, he shied away from questions about the state budget's impact on Wake County schools saying he was still getting up to speed on those issues.

Merrill served as superintendent of the Virginia Beach City Public Schools, the third largest school division in Virginia, since 2006. Prior to that, he served six years as superintendent of the Alamance-Burlington School System.

Previously, Merrill spent 16 years in the Wake County Public School System, last serving as Associate Superintendent for Administration and Finance. He began his career in 1973 as an English teacher.
