With less than three weeks until the start of the school year, school leaders still need to hire nearly 40 teachers. There is a critical need for teachers certified in adapted curriculum, teaching students with severe or profound autism, or those with moderate intellectual ability.
Interested candidates were asked to attend the job fair held Saturday, and some even walked away with new jobs.
Denise Diesel traveled from Orlando, Florida for the opportunity to work with Wake County's special needs students.
"I think it's fantastic, and I think this is a good way to go about it. To cast a broad net rather than looking locally, or whoever happens to be hand," Diesel said.
Amy Bodell showed up to the hiring blitz and walked away the newest special education teacher at Reedy Creek Middle School.
"Little did I know that I would settle down with a middle school that has a position that I really wanted!" Bodell said. "They were looking for someone qualified with mental disabilities; they were looking for someone experienced with middle schoolers. And it just so happens that they were looking for someone who enjoys teaching math."
