Fayetteville City Council to honor 'Bicycle Man'

FAYETTEVILLE

Fayetteville city council members threw their support behind naming a section of the Cape Fear River Trail after Moses Mathis, who died in July.

Many in the community considered Mathis a real life Santa Claus. Every year he would repair donated bicycles and then give them away to kids just in time for Christmas.

His widow says she's touched by the council's actions.

"I'm glad they feel that way about Moses," said Ann Mathis. "Sometimes he got discouraged, but I got to say the community really stuck by him. They really have."

City council will cast a final vote on the tribute on Sept. 23.
